Débora Domingo-Calabuig graduated in architecture from the School of Architecture of Valencia (Spain) and l’École d’Architecture de Paris-La Défense (France). With a specialized degree in Building Construction, she has practiced architecture for many years, earning critical recognition for her built projects and award competitions. In 2005, she obtained her doctorate from Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
She joined the Department of Architectural Design at the University of Valencia (UPV) as an adjunct professor in 2000 and is currently an associate professor. She has taught design workshops at all undergraduate and graduate levels, organized specialized seminars and workshops, and regularly supervises doctoral theses and other research dissertations.
From 2012 to 2016, she served as Assistant Director for Research at the Valencia School of Architecture and was Editor in Chief of the “VLC arquitectura” Research Journal until 2018. She is also a Research Academy member of the European Association for Architectural Education. In 2020, she received the Lilly Reich Grant for equality in architecture, alongside Laura Lizondo-Sevilla and Avelina Prat-García. Since 2021, she has been a founding member of the New European Bauhaus goes South Lab.
Her research interests include the methods, means, and impact of architectural research. She focuses on the social considerations in architecture and urban design, particularly in the Western-European post-war contexts of the 60s and 70s, and changes in higher education and campus planning. Recently, she has turned to research on adaptive reuse and design strategies for these architectures and urban designs towards their ecological transition.
Currently, she holds the position of vice-rector for Sustainable Development of the Campus at UPV. Her responsibilities include planning and launching the university’s ecological transition project to achieve carbon neutrality, implementing sustainability actions in university spaces, and promoting a culture of environmental awareness.
