Andrea Oldani (MArch, PhD) is an assistant professor of landscape architecture in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano. He is a faculty member of the School of Architecture, Planning and Construction Engineering and is the vice-coordinator of the MSc in Landscape Architecture – Land Landscape Heritage programme. Since 2008, he has developed theoretical, didactic and design contributions by pursuing two main research lines that have many areas of intersection.

The first concerns the landscape of contemporary infrastructures, with a focus on riverscapes and waterscape architecture. Here, attention is focused on the relationship between description, critical interpretation, and the definition of modification strategies, investigating how the architectural discipline can contribute to complex, interdisciplinary projects. This research opens up the study of the effects and design consequences of climate change, as well as the improvement of environmental resilience, including the theme of ‘plural’ maintenance.

The second research theme focuses on the regeneration of underused, abandoned and degraded landscapes, including the architectural recovery of artefacts and the definition of reuse strategies.

He has developed research projects on these themes in Italy and abroad, publishing and presenting his work at invited lectures, seminars, and international scientific conferences. In 2023, he was invited as a Visiting Researcher at the Centre of Excellence in Regional, Urban and Built Environmental Analytics (RUBEA) at the Faculty of Architecture – Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. There, he worked on the project ‘Bangkok’s Water Palimpsest’.

Oldani’s research outcomes are documented by a consistent number of scientific publications, including the books “Paesaggi Instabili. Architettura tra terra e acqua” (2016), “Acque e paesaggi d’invenzione. Descrizione, meraviglia e nuova interpretazione di infrastrutture e architetture dell’acqua” (2020), “The Scolmatore delle Piene a Nord-Ovest di Milano Canal as a landscape of diversity” (2022) and “Towards an emblematic for the maintenance of hydraulic infrastructure” (2023).
